Radiator Repair – Allen, TX

How Important is the Radiator Anyway?

The radiator is the main component in your car’s cooling system, keeping the coolant/anti-freeze from boiling over so that your engine doesn’t overheat. There’s not much high-tech about it, it’s pretty simple, but it’s absolutely critical. If there’s a leak in the system, your engine can quickly overheat in the scorching Texas summer, leaving you stranded on the side of the road with possible expensive engine damage such as a warped head.

Thankfully, it rarely gets cold enough in north Texas to worry about your coolant freezing, but maintaining the correct mixture of water and anti-freeze also protects the system in the summer by keeping the boiling temperature higher.

Signs of trouble

If you see white steam coming out from under the hood, that’s a definite sign of trouble. Or, if the temperature gauge on the dashboard runs into the red or the warning light turns on, you need to pull over immediately and turn the car off.

You should check the coolant overflow tank regularly to see if there’s sufficient coolant. If you constantly need to add water/coolant, you may have a leak in the system. When you turn the heater on, if there’s a funny odor, there may be a leak. If you find water in the foot well of the driver or passenger, you likely have a leak. Finally, radiator hoses should be checked to ensure they are still in good shape because old hoses can rupture unexpectedly, again leading to an overheated engine.

The cooling system operates under pressure, so any type of leak will compromise its function. Again, this is a simple but highly critical part of your automobile. It should be inspected regularly as part of the car’s preventative maintenance schedule. Having your car checked at the recommended intervals will enable a qualified automotive technician to spot potential problems long before they become catastrophic failures.

Replacement or Repair

Sometimes a radiator can be repaired, while often it needs to be replaced; most other parts are replacement items. The coolant/antifreeze/water mixture should also be flushed and replaced according to your auto manufacturer’s recommended interval, although most people only do it when something breaks. Preventative maintenance is usually best.

If you do notice any of the above warning signs, bring your car in and we’ll give you a free inspection. Problems that are caught early on may be small repairs, compared to ignoring the symptoms, which usually ends up costing more. Problems usually don’t disappear on their own.
